Join Royal Sussex Regiment 10th Oct 1899 at Brighton, service no. 5981. Gave age as 19 years 3 months. Rank at marriage shown as Private Royal Sussex Reg't Shorncliffe Camp. Serve in South Africa 1900 - 1902. Also India, Malta & Crete. F Whipp age 30 shown sailing alone 29th July 1910 from Liverpool on 'Empress of Ireland' Canadian Pacific Lines to Quebec, Canada. Discharged from the Army in 1911after 4 years as a Army Reserve. Joined CEF, (The Canadian Expeditionary Force) with service no. 154157 on the 21st September 1915 with the 1st Pioneer Battalion the designation for the Canadian army raised for service during World War I. Soon promoted as Sergearnt in the Canadian Railway Troops (CRT) Battalion who were responsible for operating and maintaining the railway systems in France, which were crucial for transporting troops, supplies and equipment.
